WHY MOROCCO/ WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT MOROCCO?

This question is on the top of the list ;) I heard/ read it hundreds (if not thousands) times. Why do I like Morocco so much? I love its diversity, I wrote more about it here. I find this country a challenging one. If you think it’s so easy to move to a culture that is completely different than yours – YOU ARE WRONG. It’s not, but since I get bored easily and I need challenges and adrenaline – Morocco is a perfect option for me. At least for now. What else do I love here? Pace of life, climate and endless opportunities (if you’ve entrepreneur’s soul you know what I mean).

HOW DID YOU COME HERE?

That’s a big longer story – I never fully answered via message as my fingers would hurt me if I type it each time. Briefly, I came here in September 2010 for holidays. I found that Agadir and Marrakech were not enough for me, I felt there was more mysteries to unveil! I promised myself to come back to this country but for a long period of time. Years passed… I got a BA in language methodology and decided to volunteer in a French-speaking Arab country in an orphanage. Choice was quite obvious: Lebanon, Algeria, Tunisia or Morocco. I came across AIESEC, which offers amazing opportunities for students willing to gain experience abroad. I applied. Deep inside I wanted it to be Morocco but I couldn’t find the right project, so everything was ready for my trip to Algeria (money for the ticket, my place in the project, I was also about to apply for the visa).

(Un)luckily, the project was cancelled and one day later I got an email from someone from AIESEC Casablanca that my profile matches perfectly with what they were looking for. I had a Skype interview and… I forgot about it. Few days later I received an acceptance note. The same day I booked my ticket to Morocco.

I was a little bit scared about this adventure that was waiting for me – living and working in a different country… But deep inside I felt it was exactly what I wanted. I had spent a week in Casablanca and the decision was made: I am staying!

WHAT SHOULD I PAY ATTENTION IF I AM A FEMALE TRAVELLING ALONE?

Morocco is generally a safe country, as tourist industry brings a lot of money the government protects tourists and usually stands on their side if something happens. One thing I strongly encourage you to do is to dress modestly. You, as a foreigner, will attract (unwanted) attention anyway. If you add to that provocative clothes you will not walk peacefully. If you want to be respected and not get bothered all the time – it’s better to cover your legs, clevage and arms. Baggy clothes will do the thing too! Unfortunately, Moroccan men are quite hot blooded and they often catcall women on the streets… Night bus rides are not recommended, I’ve had some bad experiences… I wrote more about it here. Save police number, 19, and don’t hesitate to call them whenever something unpleasant happens.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MOROCCO AND POLAND?

I really dislike this question. There are numerous differences… From the way people think, the way they see things, to the way we eat or drive. One needs to visit both countries to see!

DO YOU WANT TO STAY HERE FOREVER?

For now I am pretty good here. Sometimes I miss Poland but I know I still want to experience the world. I do see myself living here forever… What will life bring? You never know :)
