Meet Latifa Asselouf: Breaking Barriers in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains

In the heart of Morocco’s Atlas Mountains, Latifa Asselouf is redefining what it means to be a mountain guide. As one of the few women to earn official certification from the Kingdom of Morocco, she’s blazing trails both literally and figuratively in a traditionally male-dominated field.

A Groundbreaking Achievement In March 2018, Latifa achieved what few thought possible – becoming a certified guide of natural spaces (Agrément numéro 964), completing an intensely selective and physically demanding certification process. This rare accomplishment marks her as one of the few female certified guides in Morocco.

Base Camp: Amizmiz Based in the charming town of Amizmiz, nestled in the Atlas foothills, Latifa offers experiences ranging from gentle afternoon walks to challenging multi-day expeditions. Her specialty? Creating authentic connections between visitors and local Berber communities.

Available Adventures:

  • Afternoon Walks (2 hours, Easy): Perfect for experiencing real Moroccan town life, including visits to local potters, bakeries, and Berber families
  • Day Trips (3-4 hours, Easy): Deeper mountain exploration with traditional tajine lunch and optional henna/kohl experiences
  • Two-Day Ouirgane Trek (6 hours/day, Medium): Through stunning landscapes and authentic villages
  • Mount Toubkal Expeditions (3-4 days): Summit North Africa’s highest peak (4,167m)
  • Custom Treks: From 2-10 days, tailored to your abilities

A Respected Community Leader What truly sets Latifa apart is her deep connection with local communities. As previous client Neil Nussey shares: “It was a delight to see children and adults greet her in every village we passed through… She is clearly an inspiration for them all.”
