From Ancient Kasbahs to Dramatic Gorges: The Magic of Morocco’s Southern Route

There's something magical about the journey from Aït Ben Haddou to the Todra Gorges. Having lived in Morocco for nearly a decade, I've made this trip countless times, and it never fails to take my breath away. Let me share with you one of Morocco's most spectacular routes, where every turn reveals another stunning vista.

The Hollywood Star: Aït Ben Haddou

Our journey begins at the legendary Aït Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site that has captured the imagination of filmmakers for decades. This ancient fortified village (ksar) has starred in countless Hollywood productions - from "Gladiator" to "Game of Thrones," "Kingdom of Heaven," and even "Asterix & Obelix: Mission Cleopatra." As you wander through its narrow alleys, it's easy to see why film directors can't resist its charm.

Best Time to Visit

Visit early morning or late afternoon to catch the magical light on the kasbahs and avoid the midday tour buses. The sight of the rising or setting sun painting the mud-brick buildings in golden hues is simply unforgettable.

The Road Less Traveled: Hidden Treasures

Between Aït Ben Haddou and the Todra Gorges lies a world of unexpected discoveries. One of my favorite stops is the troglodyte caves - ancient dwellings carved directly into the cliff faces. These remarkable human-made caves offer natural air conditioning, providing blessed relief from the summer heat.

Where to Stay Along the Way

Eco-Lodge Recommendation: Just 8km outside Ouarzazate, I discovered a peaceful eco-lodge that offers a perfect overnight stop. With its swimming pool and stunning views, it's an ideal place to break up your journey.

The Oasis of Tinghir

Before reaching the dramatic Todra Gorges, you'll pass through Tinghir, one of Morocco's most beautiful oasis towns. The massive palm grove here stretches for kilometers, creating a green ribbon through the desert landscape. Take time to explore the abandoned village on the other side of the river - it's one of my favorite spots in all of Morocco.

Local Tip

Stay at Auberge Atlas, where you can enjoy:

  • Spacious rooms
  • A beautiful swimming pool
  • Direct access to palm grove walks
  • Reasonable prices (around 40 euros with breakfast)

The Grand Finale: Todra Gorges

The Todra Gorges are nature's skyscrapers - massive cliff walls reaching heights of 300 meters. While they're impressive at any time, visit early morning to avoid the tour buses and experience the gorges at their most peaceful.

Adventure Opportunities

For climbing enthusiasts, Todra offers world-class routes. Several agencies provide equipment and guidance for via ferrata experiences along the gorge walls.

Hidden Gem: Tamtattouchte

One of my absolute favorite discoveries is the village of Tamtattouchte, located just beyond the main gorges. Few tourists venture here, but those who do are rewarded with:

  • Incredible mountain views
  • Traditional village life
  • Authentic guesthouses
  • Complete tranquility

Where to Stay

Look for the small guesthouse at the village entrance, offering:

  • Simple but comfortable rooms
  • A small swimming pool
  • Very reasonable prices (300 dirhams for a double room)
  • Family rooms available

Practical Tips for Your Journey

  • Rent a 4x4 if you plan to explore the back roads
  • Carry plenty of water
  • Start early to make the most of your day
  • Keep your camera ready - photo opportunities are endless
  • Be respectful when photographing local people
  • Learn a few basic Arabic or Berber phrases - they go a long way!
