Why Essaouira is Our Favorite Moroccan City: A Local’s Guide in 2025

There's something magical about Essaouira that keeps drawing us back. This enchanting coastal city has captured our hearts with its perfect blend of historical charm and laid-back beach vibes. As we return in 2025, we're even more convinced that Essaouira might just be Morocco's best-kept secret.

A Tale of Two Worlds

Essaouira masterfully balances two distinct personalities. On one side, you have the historic medina with its UNESCO-listed fortified walls, while on the other, there's a sprawling beach complete with rolling sand dunes. This unique combination makes it different from any other Moroccan city we've visited.

The Historic Harbor: A Photographer's Paradise

The harbor area is truly one of the most picturesque we've seen worldwide. Dozens of traditional blue fishing boats bob in the water, creating a scene that feels frozen in time. For just 60 dirhams, you can climb the fortified walls around the harbor for breathtaking views. Pro tip: visit during sunset when the golden light bathes the ancient ramparts in warm hues.

Beyond the Medina Walls

The Palace in the Dunes

One of Essaouira's hidden gems is the mysterious Dar Sultan Palace. Dating back to the 18th century, these atmospheric ruins are slowly being reclaimed by the sand dunes. While recent developments suggest future excavation plans, there's something hauntingly beautiful about seeing this piece of history emerging from the desert landscape.

The Legendary Connection

Did you know about Essaouira's connection to Jimi Hendrix? While some local legends claim he wrote "Castles Made of Sand" here, the timing doesn't quite add up - but don't let that stop you from visiting the quirky Hendrix Café in nearby Diabat!

Practical Tips for Visitors

Where to Stay

We've tried both traditional riads and modern apartments here. While riads offer undeniable charm, we found modern accommodations more practical, especially in winter when riads can get quite cold. Our recent stay cost $70 per night for four people - incredible value for the space and comfort provided.

Food Scene

Don't miss trying local specialties like:

  • Briouats (savory pastries)
  • Seffa (cinnamon-spiced couscous with raisins)
  • Fresh seafood from the harbor

Activities

  • Surfing: Perfect for beginners with gentler waves than other coastal spots
  • Wind and kitesurfing: The city's famous winds make it ideal for these sports
  • Historical walks: The free city walls offer excellent ocean views
  • Shopping: Less hectic than Marrakech's souks

Why We Keep Coming Back

What sets Essaouira apart is its remarkably laid-back atmosphere. Unlike the bustling streets of Marrakech, here you can wander the medina without feeling overwhelmed. The blend of European and Moroccan influences creates a unique cultural tapestry, reflected in everything from the architecture to the local art scene.
