Here's how it works: pick your seafood, and they'll grill it fresh for you, served with salad, drinks, and bread. Don't stress about choosing the "best" vendor - they're all pretty much the same quality, so just go with whoever feels right.
During our lunch, they surprised us with two free grilled sardines. Simple preparation, perfectly executed, and they paired beautifully with the fresh salad and bread. Eating fresh seafood while watching those iconic blue boats in the harbor - it doesn't get much better than this.
Beach Life and Ocean Breezes
After lunch, we walked along Essaouira's beautiful beach. The contrast with Marrakech was incredible - instead of desert heat, we had cool ocean breezes. Kids were playing soccer on the sand, others were swimming, and the paddleboarders we'd seen earlier were still out enjoying the waves.
The beach stretches for miles, giving you plenty of space to walk, relax, or just sit and watch the Atlantic Ocean. The white and blue of Essaouira extends to the beachfront cafes, where you can grab mint tea and watch the world go by.
Shopping Without the Stress
Shopping in Essaouira is a completely different experience from other Moroccan cities. I found a beautiful black leather crossbody bag in a father-son-uncle shop. The family was incredibly friendly, and I managed to negotiate the price down to 40 dirhams, paying an extra five to have the strap adjusted.
The best part? No pressure, no aggressive tactics - just honest business and friendly conversation. This is what shopping should feel like when you're traveling.
The Cats of Essaouira
Here's something unexpected - Essaouira has the most adorable cats everywhere! They're lounging on rugs, sleeping under chairs and tables, just living their best lives. If you love cats, bring your camera because you'll be stopping every few steps to take pictures.
These cats seem to embody Essaouira's relaxed spirit perfectly. They're content, peaceful, and add to the city's overall charm.
Sunset and Reflection
We ended our day with mint tea at a waterfront cafe, watching kids play soccer on the beach and enjoying the amazing weather. Sitting there, looking out at the Essaouira white and blue buildings against the ocean backdrop, I realized how perfect this spontaneous decision had been.

If you're staying in Marrakech, a day trip to Essaouira is absolutely worth it. The three-hour drive gives you enough time to experience the city's highlights while still returning to Marrakech the same day.
I booked through an Airbnb experience that gave us four hours in the afternoon to explore at our own pace. This was perfect - enough time to see the main sights without feeling rushed.
However, if you can stay overnight, I'd highly recommend it. Essaouira at sunset and sunrise must be absolutely magical, and you'd have more time to explore the art galleries and perhaps try some of the water sports.
