The journey to Nador revealed an unexpected side of Morocco that few tourists experience. Following National Route 15, we discovered landscapes reminiscent of the American Southwest, complete with dramatic mountain passes and stunning coastal views.
The Spectacular Route to Nador
Our adventure began on National Route 15, branching off at Guercif. What followed was a 200-kilometer stretch of jaw-dropping scenery that could easily be mistaken for Arizona or New Mexico. The landscape alternated between rocky desert, mountains, and valleys, with only the occasional mosque reminding us we were still in Morocco.
A Train Through the Desert
One of the most striking features along Route 15 was the railway line running parallel to the road. Massive freight trains carrying minerals traversed the landscape, adding to the American West atmosphere. The only difference? Replace the saguaro cacti with eucalyptus trees.
The Mountain Adventure Gone Wrong
Our most intense moment came when attempting to climb the mountains behind Nador. With gradients exceeding 20-25%, our vehicle struggled on the steep inclines. The combination of overheating and challenging terrain forced us to make a careful retreat, providing a nerve-wracking but ultimately safe adventure.
Discovering Nador’s Beauty
Nador itself is relatively modern compared to historic Moroccan cities like Fes or Meknes. Unlike these ancient imperial cities, Nador is a flat, port city situated along a beautiful lagoon. While it may lack an ancient medina, it compensates with:
- Stunning coastal views
- A beautiful lagoon
- An ornithological park
- Mountain vistas
- Shell-covered beaches
Practical Tips for Visiting Nador:
- Allow plenty of time to enjoy the scenic Route 15
- Be cautious when exploring mountain roads, especially in larger vehicles
- Visit the ornithological park (check opening times)
- Consider timing your visit to avoid peak border crossing times if planning to visit Melilla
- Enjoy local restaurants with views over the lagoon
While Nador might not be on every tourist’s Morocco itinerary, it offers a unique blend of natural beauty and modern development. The journey there alone, through landscapes reminiscent of the American Southwest, makes it worth the visit – just be prepared for some unexpected adventures along the way.
