We had about an hour and 30 minutes of daylight left. Would it be enough time? With a mix of pride and nervousness, I pushed on. "Everything goes very well, very, very well. I'm very happy and proud of us," I remember thinking as we started climbing higher into the High Atlas Mountains.

As I navigated the winding road, I couldn't help but marvel at the engineering feat beneath my wheels. Tizi n'Test Pass wasn't always there for travelers like us to enjoy. This remarkable road was built by French engineers between 1926 and 1932 - almost a century ago!
Imagine the determination it took to carve a 48-kilometer road through these imposing mountains. At its highest point, the pass sits at 2,093 meters above sea level. That's higher than many European ski resorts! When you drive this road, you're literally following in the tracks of history.
The Golden Rule: Daylight Only!
If there's one piece of advice I absolutely must share about Tizi n'Test Pass, it's this: "Don't come here when it's dark, okay? Because it's really dangerous."
This isn't just a suggestion - it's a safety rule I feel so strongly about that I found myself repeating it three times during my journey. This road demands daylight hours, not just for safety but also because you'll miss all the spectacular views if you drive in darkness.
The narrow road, steep drops, and winding turns are challenging enough in good visibility. In darkness, they become genuinely hazardous. Trust me on this one!
The Driving Experience: Thrilling But Demanding
"This part is freaking fun! Fun as hell! I'm having so much fun!" I remember exclaiming as I navigated one particularly exciting section. But I immediately added: "Even it's not very easy one and is not safe...definitely is not safe."
That pretty much sums up the driving experience on Tizi n'Test Pass. It's incredibly exhilarating, with each turn revealing new vistas and challenges. But it demands your complete attention and respect.
The road is narrow in many places, with tight turns and occasional rough patches. Some sections have sheer drops on one side with no guardrails. You'll need to drive slowly, use your horn around blind corners, and be prepared to give way to oncoming vehicles.
How Long Does It Take?
Many visitors underestimate the time needed to drive this mountain pass. From my experience, "the pass is around 1 hour I guess, around 1 hour drive. It's quite long."
That's just for the pass itself. Remember to factor in extra time for stops to take photos, rest, or simply admire the spectacular scenery. And if you're continuing on to another destination (as I was heading to Imlil), remember to add that driving time too.
I still had a two-hour drive ahead after crossing the pass, but the experience was so energizing that I didn't even feel tired. "I'm still really, really excited. I don't feel that I'm tired yet," I noted as sunset approached.
What You'll See Along The Way
One of the most compelling reasons to drive Tizi n'Test Pass in daylight is the incredible scenery you'll encounter. As I drove, I was constantly amazed by the "beautiful landscape, beautiful mountains."
The road offers glimpses of traditional Berber villages clinging to mountainsides, some seemingly unchanged for centuries. You'll notice "abandoned houses" that tell silent stories of how life in these mountains has evolved over generations.
The terrain changes as you climb, with different vegetation and geological features marking your ascent. And the light! Oh, the light on the mountains as the sun begins to set is simply magical. The golden glow transforms everything, making even simple stones look like treasures.
Best Time to Visit Tizi n'Test Pass
Based on my sunset adventure, I'd recommend starting this journey in the morning or early afternoon. This gives you plenty of time to enjoy the pass without rushing and still reach your destination before dark.
Spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) offer the most pleasant temperatures and clear skies. Summer can be very hot, especially at lower elevations, while winter might bring snow to the higher sections of the pass, making driving conditions challenging.
I chose to drive it just before sunset, which offered stunning lighting for photos but left me racing against the fading light. "It was worth it, I'm still really, really excited," I said, but starting earlier would have allowed more stops and a more relaxed pace.
Getting to Tizi n'Test Pass
As I mentioned, I approached the pass from Taroudant, heading toward Imlil. This is a popular route, allowing you to connect the Souss Valley with destinations like Marrakech or the High Atlas Mountains.
From Marrakech, you can also approach the pass from the north, driving south through Asni and then up toward the pass. Either direction offers magnificent views, though the approach from the south (Taroudant side) gives you a more dramatic ascent.
Public transport is limited in this area, so having your own vehicle or hiring a driver is the most practical option. If you're not confident driving on mountain roads, I strongly recommend hiring a local driver familiar with the route.
Villages Along the Route
One of the joys of this journey is glimpsing "nice villages" along the way. These mountain communities have maintained traditional ways of life that seem far removed from Morocco's busy cities.
Look out for terraced fields where locals grow crops on seemingly impossible slopes. Notice the traditional architecture using local materials that blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape. If you have time, stopping at one of these villages for mint tea offers a perfect break and a chance to experience Berber hospitality.
As darkness was falling during my drive, I couldn't explore these villages properly, which is another reason to start your journey with plenty of daylight ahead.

If you enjoy photography, Tizi n'Test Pass offers endless opportunities. The landscape is naturally photogenic, with dramatic mountains, traditional villages, and winding roads that create perfect compositions.
For the best light, aim for early morning or late afternoon, when the sun's angle creates beautiful shadows and highlights the textures of the mountains. There are several viewpoints along the route where you can safely pull over to take photos.
Just remember, safety first! Only stop in designated areas or where there's plenty of space to pull off the road completely. And be respectful when photographing local people or villages - always ask permission first.
