As I stepped off the local bus after nearly 4 hours from Marrakech, the refreshing scent of the Atlantic Ocean welcomed me to Essaouira. This charming coastal town quickly captured my heart, becoming one of my favorite places in Morocco. If you're looking for a peaceful escape from the bustling medinas of larger cities, let me share my experience spending 2 days in Essaouira, a true hidden gem along Morocco's Atlantic coast.
Why Essaouira Stole My Heart
The moment I arrived in Essaouira, I knew this place was special. The calm atmosphere, beautiful surroundings, and friendly locals created a magical vibe that's hard to find elsewhere in Morocco. As someone who prefers vegetarian food, I was delighted to discover plenty of fresh seafood and vegetarian options in the local restaurants.
Walking through the streets with my bags toward my accommodation, I couldn't help but notice the seagulls everywhere and breathe in that wonderful sea air. The peaceful energy here is a welcome contrast to the intensity of cities like Marrakech.
Getting to Essaouira from Marrakech

Goats on trees on our way to Essaouira
I traveled from Marrakech to Essaouira by local bus, which took about 3 hours and 45 minutes with several stops along the way. I booked my ticket online through https://markoub.ma/en, where I could easily select my preferred date and time, pay by card, and receive all the details about the bus company and meeting point. While I chose the local bus company through this convenient platform, there are more comfortable options for tourists:
- CTM and Supratour buses: These companies are well-known among travelers, more comfortable, and slightly more expensive than local buses. Most tourists prefer these services.
- Private transfers: If you prefer convenience, private transfers are available.
- Day excursions: If you're short on time, many companies offer day trips from Marrakech.
Travel tip: If you choose local buses like I did, be prepared to potentially be the only tourist onboard! Also note that different bus companies operate from different stations in Marrakech.
Where to Stay in Essaouira
I found an incredible deal on accommodation in Essaouira. For a very reasonable price, I stayed in what felt like a full apartment ! My accommodation featured:
- A small kitchen
- A living room with beautiful décor and view
- A spacious bedroom
- A large bathroom
- A lovely rooftop terrace
When I asked Monika about the best accommodation in Essaouira, she advised: "For accommodation in Essaouira, I'd suggest choosing between the scenic beachside hotels or the charming riads tucked within the Medina walls. Don't worry about location within the Medina – it's all safe and atmospheric! While most mid-range riads offer similar amenities, Villa Garance truly stood out during our stays in both November and February. This gem is just a short stroll from the main square, boasting beautifully appointed rooms with incredibly comfortable beds. Their breakfast spread was absolutely delightful – think fluffy omelettes, perfectly scrambled eggs, creamy yoghurt, fresh seasonal fruits, homemade cakes, and an impressive cheeseboard. For those seeking a more luxurious experience, Madada Mogador is worth the splurge."
Exploring Essaouira's Historic Port

One of the highlights of my visit was exploring Essaouira's busy fishing port. I recommend visiting in the afternoon when the fishing boats return with their catch of the day. The scene is incredibly lively:
- Fishing boats docking with their fresh catches
- The fish auction taking place (locally known as the "criée")
- Seagulls and cats hoping for scraps
- Locals buying the freshest seafood
The colorful fishing boats make for beautiful photos, and watching the bustling activity gives you a glimpse into local life that depends on the sea.
The Famous Ramparts of Essaouira
Essaouira's most iconic feature has to be its impressive ramparts. These fortified walls have an interesting history:
- The original Portuguese fortifications from the 16th century have completely disappeared
- The current ramparts were built in the 18th century
- A French engineer designed them at the request of the Sultan
- They were built during a time when Essaouira was an important trading post between Europe and sub-Saharan Africa
Fun fact: These historic walls were featured in Season 3 of Game of Thrones! Walking along these ramparts, with views of the crashing Atlantic waves on one side and the medina on the other, was one of my favorite experiences in Essaouira.
The Medina: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

I spent part of my second morning wandering through Essaouira's medina. Unlike the larger, more chaotic medinas in other Moroccan cities, Essaouira's feels more manageable and less overwhelming. The blue and white color scheme, clean streets, and relaxed atmosphere make it a joy to explore.
During my walks through the medina, I encountered a friendly shop owner who invited me in for traditional Moroccan mint tea. These spontaneous moments of hospitality are what make traveling in Morocco so special - the genuine warmth and sharing culture is something I truly appreciate.
Essaouira's Beautiful Beach
Before leaving, I made sure to visit Essaouira's expansive beach. It's impressively large with incredibly soft sand that feels wonderful under your feet. The Atlantic waters are refreshing (though quite cool!), making it perfect for a quick dip on a hot day.
The beach is a center of activity with:
- Locals enjoying family time
- Wind and kite surfers (Essaouira is famous for its winds)
- Visitors taking leisurely walks along the shore
- Spectacular sunset views
Travel tip: Even if you don't plan to swim, taking off your shoes and feeling the soft sand between your toes is a must-do experience!
Seafood Paradise: Dining in Essaouira
As a coastal town, Essaouira is famous for its fresh seafood. Near the port, you'll find numerous small restaurant stalls that can cook fish directly from the day's catch. For someone like me who doesn't eat meat but enjoys fish, Essaouira was perfect.
I was impressed by the variety of dining options:
- Fresh fish grilled to order at port-side stalls
- Vegetarian-friendly cafés
- Traditional Moroccan cuisine with coastal influences
- Charming cafés perfect for people-watching
My 2-Day Essaouira Itinerary
If you're planning a short visit like mine, here's how I spent my time:
Day 1:
- Arrived by bus from Marrakech in the afternoon
- Checked into accommodation and dropped off luggage
- Explored the port during the fish auction
- Wandered through parts of the medina
- Enjoyed seafood dinner near the port
- Relaxed at my accommodation's rooftop terrace
Day 2:
- Breakfast with sea views
- Explored the historic ramparts
- Final walk through the medina
- Quick visit to the beach
- Departed for Marrakech in early afternoon
When to Visit Essaouira
I visited during a time when the weather was perfect - sunny but not too hot, with a gentle sea breeze. The best times to visit Essaouira are generally:
- Spring (March-May): Pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds
- Fall (September-November): Warm days, cool evenings, and good conditions for water activities
- Summer (June-August): Busier with tourists, but the strong trade winds (known locally as the "Alizés") keep temperatures comfortable
Why You Should Stay Longer Than I Did
My biggest regret is that I could only stay in Essaouira for one night. If you have the flexibility in your Morocco itinerary, I highly recommend staying at least 2-3 nights. The relaxed pace of life here is perfect for:
- Unwinding after the intensity of Marrakech
- Enjoying longer beach walks and water activities
- Discovering more local restaurants and cafés
- Taking day trips to nearby attractions
- Simply soaking in the peaceful atmosphere
Getting Back to Marrakech
For my return journey to Marrakech, I once again took a local bus. If you prefer more comfort, remember that CTM and Supratour offer reliable services between the two cities. The journey gives you time to reflect on your Essaouira experience while preparing for the energetic pace of Marrakech.
Final Thoughts on Essaouira
Essaouira offered me exactly what I needed - a peaceful coastal retreat with beautiful scenery, friendly people, and delicious food. The calm atmosphere, historic architecture, and stunning beach combined to create what quickly became one of my favorite destinations in Morocco.
If you're planning a trip to Morocco and wondering if Essaouira is worth visiting - the answer is absolutely yes! Whether as a day trip or, preferably, an overnight stay, this coastal gem provides a perfect contrast to Morocco's imperial cities.
