Picture this: vibrant souks filled with colorful treasures, the enchanting sounds of street musicians, and the tempting aroma of spices wafting through ancient alleyways. Marrakech is often thought of as an exotic destination for adults, but I'm here to let you in on a secret – this magical Red City is actually an incredible playground for children too!
Since moving to Marrakech, I've watched countless families navigate these historic streets, sometimes looking a bit overwhelmed by the sensory feast that is Marrakech. Parents often ask me, "But what can we actually do here with kids?" The answer always makes their eyes light up – because beyond the bustling medina and historic palaces lies a world of adventures perfectly suited for young explorers.
Sure, you can visit the famous Jamaa el-Fna square and marvel at the snake charmers (from a safe distance!), or wander through the majestic Bahia Palace. But there's so much more to discovering Marrakech with children. From splashing in water parks to riding camels in the desert, cooking with local families to exploring magical gardens – this city offers endless possibilities for creating unforgettable family memories.
Let me share some of our favorite family-friendly activities that will not only keep your little ones entertained but also help them fall in love with the fascinating culture and warmth of Morocco. These are the experiences that transform a simple holiday into a magical adventure your children will talk about for years to come.
1. Cool Off at Marrakech's Best Water Parks
When the Moroccan sun heats up, there's nothing better than spending a day splashing and playing at one of Marrakech's fantastic water parks. Let me share our two favorite spots that guarantee endless fun for the whole family.
Oasiria Water Park
Located just 13 kilometers from the city center, Oasiria is a refreshing oasis that spans over 10 acres of natural landscapes. What makes this park special is how it combines water fun with beautiful green surroundings, offering a perfect escape from the city's hustle and bustle.
Aqua Mirage Club
Located about 30 minutes from Marrakech, Aqua Mirage is part of a family-friendly resort that offers an exciting water park experience. What sets this park apart is its variety of activities and the option to make it part of your stay.
Both parks maintain high safety standards with trained lifeguards and regular water quality checks. While they're both excellent choices, Oasiria tends to be more popular with tourists due to its proximity to the city center, while Aqua Mirage offers a more resort-style experience.
For families with young children, I usually recommend starting with Oasiria due to its excellent facilities for little ones and easier access from the city. However, if you're planning a longer stay in Marrakech, why not try both? Each park offers its own unique charm and exciting features that make for unforgettable family memories.
2. Discover Marrakech's Enchanting Gardens
One of the best ways to escape the vibrant energy of the medina is to explore Marrakech's stunning gardens. Let me share two magical spaces that never fail to captivate children's imaginations.
Anima Garden: A Whimsical Paradise
Just a short drive from the city center, Anima Garden is truly a hidden gem that brings art and nature together in the most spectacular way. Created by renowned Austrian artist Andre Heller and opened in 2017, this garden is like stepping into a storybook.
Jardin Majorelle: A Classic Beauty
While perhaps more famous among adults for its Yves Saint Laurent connection, Majorelle Garden offers its own special magic for children. This historic garden, created by French artist Jacques Majorelle over nearly 40 years, is a peaceful oasis of color and calm.
Making the Most of Your Garden Visits:
- For younger children (under 10), Anima Garden is often the better choice with its playful atmosphere and interactive elements
- Majorelle might be more appreciated by older children who can understand its historical significance
- Consider visiting both if time allows - they offer completely different experiences
- Morning visits are best for both gardens when temperatures are cooler and crowds are smaller
- Both gardens have excellent cafés for breaks and refreshments
Parent's Note: While both gardens are beautiful, if you're short on time and visiting with younger children, I typically recommend Anima Garden. Its playful design and interactive elements tend to keep little ones more engaged. However, if you have older children interested in art and history, Majorelle Garden provides a more sophisticated experience that they might find fascinating.
3. Take a Traditional Horse Carriage Ride
What child doesn't love a horse-drawn carriage ride? Head to the edge of Djemaa El Fna, where you'll find beautiful carriages waiting to take you on a city tour. A few tips:
- Negotiate the price beforehand (typically 200-250 dirham for an hour)
- Check the horses' condition - choose carriages with well-cared-for animals
- Use this opportunity to tell stories about ancient sultans and magical palaces
4. Get Hands-On with Moroccan Cooking
One of my favorite activities to recommend for families is a cooking class with a local family. It's a wonderful way to:
- Introduce children to new foods in a fun way
- Learn about Moroccan culture
- Create memories together
- Enjoy the fruits of your labor!
Many riads can arrange private cooking classes specifically tailored for families with children.
5. Experience Desert Magic in Agafay
Just 30 minutes from the bustling streets of Marrakech lies a completely different world - the rocky desert landscape of Agafay. While it's not the rolling sand dunes of the Sahara (that's an 8-hour journey away!), Agafay offers an incredible desert experience that's perfect for families with children of all ages.

Remember, Marrakech is a city that engages all the senses - let your children experience the sights, sounds, and (safe) tastes of this magical place. The key is to balance cultural experiences with fun activities that keep them engaged and excited.
