Living in Marrakech since 2013 has taught me one thing for sure - you don't need to break the bank to enjoy incredible food in this magical city! After countless meals and recommendations from both locals and fellow expats, I've put together this guide to my favorite affordable restaurants that perfectly capture the essence of Marrakech's diverse culinary scene.
1. L'Mida: Where Tradition Meets Modern Flair

Picture this: you're sitting in a beautifully restored riad, surrounded by the gentle sounds of traditional Moroccan music, but there's something different about this place. L'Mida has managed to strike that perfect balance between honoring traditional Moroccan flavors and adding contemporary twists that make each dish exciting and unique.
What I love most about L'Mida is how they've maintained reasonable prices while delivering an upscale dining experience. Their lamb tagine is tender enough to eat with a spoon, and the couscous dishes are always perfectly fluffy. Trust me, the ambiance alone makes you feel like you're spending way more than you actually are!
2. Café de France: A Slice of History with a View

There's something magical about sipping mint tea at Café de France while watching the sunset over Jemaa el-Fnaa square. This iconic spot has been a favorite among locals and tourists alike for decades, and I can't count how many times I've brought friends here just to see their faces light up when they first step onto the rooftop terrace.
Pro tip: Head up to the terrace about an hour before sunset to secure the best spots. The views of the Atlas Mountains in the distance, combined with the square coming alive below, create an unforgettable atmosphere that's worth way more than the modest prices they charge.
Want to Eat Like a Local at Jemaa el-Fna?
The food stalls at Jemaa el-Fna can be overwhelming — some are tourist traps, others are incredible. A guided evening food tour takes you to the stalls where locals actually eat, and your guide explains every dish so you know exactly what you're trying. It's the perfect complement to dinner at Café de France.

3. Chez Lamine: The King of Mechoui

If you want to eat like a local and experience true Marrakchi hospitality, Chez Lamine is your place. Hidden in the heart of the medina, this family-run restaurant has perfected the art of mechoui (slow-roasted lamb). The first time I visited, I couldn't believe the quality of food for the price!
The simplicity of the decor might fool you, but don't let it - this place is a testament to how focusing on one thing and doing it perfectly pays off. The tender, fall-off-the-bone meat and friendly service make it a regular stop in my Marrakech food adventures.
4. Café des Épices: Spice Square's Hidden Gem

Nestled in the famous spice square (Rahba Kedima), Café des Épices offers one of my favorite lunch experiences in the medina. The ochre walls, designed by Anne Emmanuelle Favier, create such a peaceful atmosphere that you'll forget you're in the middle of one of Marrakech's busiest markets.
What keeps me coming back (besides the reasonable prices) is their rooftop terrace. There's nothing quite like enjoying a fresh salad while watching the spice vendors below and catching glimpses of the Atlas Mountains in the distance.
Want to Cook with Those Spices?
Café des Épices overlooks the spice square, so you'll see (and smell!) the incredible ingredients that make Moroccan food so special. If that inspires you, a cooking class starts right there in the souks — you shop for spices with a local chef, then learn to make tagine, couscous, and pastilla from scratch.

5. Le Tanjia: Affordable Luxury in the Medina

Located near the iconic Badii and Bahia palaces, Le Tanjia proves that you can enjoy a touch of luxury without emptying your wallet. The restaurant's three levels offer different experiences, but my personal favorite is the rooftop terrace at sunset.
Their namesake dish, the tanjia (a slow-cooked meat stew), is a must-try. And if you time your visit right, you might catch one of their evening belly dancing performances - talk about getting more than your money's worth!
Love Dinner with a Show?
If Le Tanjia's belly dancing had you hooked, Marrakech has even more dinner-and-show experiences — from traditional Moroccan evenings with live Gnawa music to rooftop restaurants with fire shows. Some include the Agafay Desert, where you dine under the stars after a sunset camel ride.

6. Chez Mmima: Where Local Comfort Meets International Flavors

Sometimes you want traditional Moroccan food, and sometimes you need a break. Chez Mmima in Gueliz understands this perfectly. Their menu is a delightful mix of Moroccan classics and international dishes, all served with that warm, homey feeling that makes you want to become a regular.
The Harira soup here reminds me of what my Moroccan friends' mothers make - it's that authentic! And the best part? The prices are as friendly as the service.
7. Turkish Steakhouse: A Delicious Plot Twist

Who would have thought one of Marrakech's best budget-friendly finds would be a Turkish restaurant? This place proves that good food knows no boundaries. The juicy steaks and kebabs here rival much more expensive establishments in the city.
Fair warning: they don't take reservations, and the secret is definitely out among locals. I usually try to arrive early or during off-peak hours to secure a table.
Final Thoughts
These seven restaurants show that Marrakech's food scene has something for everyone, regardless of budget. From traditional Moroccan flavors to international cuisines, each place offers its own unique experience while keeping prices reasonable.
Remember, some of these places can get quite busy, especially during peak tourist season. I always recommend going a bit earlier than typical meal times to secure a table. Also, while these restaurants are budget-friendly, the quality of food and experience they offer might surprise you!
Have you tried any of these places? I'd love to hear about your experiences in the comments below. And if you have other affordable restaurant recommendations in Marrakech, please share them - I'm always excited to discover new gems in this amazing city!
