When I first wrote about Tamaris back in 2016, it was already developing at a rapid pace. Now, eight years later, this peaceful getaway about 30 km from bustling Casablanca has truly come into its own. Let me take you on a journey through the changes and enduring charms of this coastal gem.
The Evolution of Tamaris
Tamaris, part of the larger Dar Bouazza area, has continued its transformation from a quiet coastal retreat to a thriving suburban community. What was once primarily a summer destination for Casablanca residents has become a year-round haven for those seeking a quieter lifestyle away from the big city hustle.
The development I mentioned years ago has indeed continued, with more Casaouis not just buying summer houses, but making Tamaris their permanent home. The area has seen an influx of new residential complexes, improved infrastructure, and an expanding array of amenities catering to both permanent residents and visitors.
Why Visit Tamaris?
Despite its growth, Tamaris still offers that peaceful getaway vibe that first drew me to write about it. Here's why it remains a fantastic destination:
- Beaches: While more populated now, the coastline still boasts some less crowded spots where you can enjoy the Atlantic views, waves, and fresh sea breeze.
- Digital Nomad Friendly: With improved internet connectivity and a growing number of cafes and co-working spaces, Tamaris has become even more attractive for digital nomads seeking a beachside work environment.
- Road Trip Worthy: It's still an excellent stop on a Moroccan road trip, offering a taste of coastal living just a short drive from Casablanca.
- Cultural Mix: The influx of both Moroccan city-dwellers and foreigners has created an interesting cultural blend, making Tamaris a unique microcosm of modern Morocco.
Getting to Tamaris
The options for reaching Tamaris have expanded since my original post:
- By Car: Taking Route d'Azzemour past Morocco Mall remains a scenic option. The road has seen improvements, making the drive smoother and quicker.
- Public Transport: While grand taxis are still an option, there are now more frequent bus services connecting Casablanca to Tamaris, offering a more comfortable and scheduled alternative.
- Ride-Hailing Apps: With the growth of ride-hailing services in Morocco, you can now easily book a car to Tamaris using popular apps, offering more flexibility than traditional taxis.
Where to Stay
The accommodation options in Tamaris have diversified significantly:
- Vacation Rentals: Platforms like Airbnb have exploded in popularity. You can find everything from cozy apartments to luxurious villas.
- Hotels and Resorts: Several new hotels have opened, catering to various budgets and preferences.
- Eco-Lodges: For the environmentally conscious traveler, there are now eco-friendly accommodation options that weren't available when I first wrote about Tamaris.
- Long-Term Rentals: With more people choosing to live in Tamaris full-time, long-term rental options have increased, perfect for digital nomads or those on extended stays.
Things to Do in Tamaris
The growth of Tamaris has brought with it a wealth of activities and attractions. Whether you're an adrenaline junkie, a nature lover, or someone looking for a relaxing day by the beach, Tamaris has something for everyone:
- Water Sports: Several schools now offer surfing, kitesurfing, and paddleboarding lessons. The Atlantic waves provide the perfect playground for water enthusiasts of all levels.

Where to Eat in Tamaris
One of the most exciting developments in Tamaris over the years has been the blossoming of its culinary scene. From beachside cafes to upscale dining experiences, there's something to satisfy every palate. Here are a few of my favorite spots:
- APULIA CUCINA ITALIANA If you're craving a taste of Italy by the Moroccan coast, look no further than Apulia. Run by two passionate Italian brothers, this gem offers some of the best Italian cuisine I've had outside of Italy. The star of the show? Their fresh pasta, particularly the raviolis aux truffes (truffle ravioli) - simply divine! Everything is made fresh using top-quality Italian ingredients. It's perfect for both lunch and dinner, and they even have a small shop selling authentic Italian products. A little slice of Italy in Tamaris!
- Les 3 Mâts Restaurant For those seeking a more upscale dining experience, Les 3 Mâts is a must-visit. It's not just a restaurant; it's one of the best private beaches in the Tamaris area. The food is delicious, and the service is impeccable - professional yet friendly. While it's on the pricier side, the high-end atmosphere, welcoming environment, and relaxing vibes make it worth every dirham. It's an ideal spot for a special family outing or a romantic dinner by the sea.
- Mawo Beach If you're looking for a lively atmosphere with good food and music, Mawo Beach fits the bill. It's a popular spot, especially during peak seasons, which can sometimes lead to slower service during busy periods. However, the vibrant ambiance and tasty dishes make up for it. It's a great place to spend a lazy afternoon or evening, enjoying the beach vibes and Tamaris's energy.
These restaurants not only offer great food but also showcase the diversity that Tamaris now offers - from authentic Italian cuisine to high-end Moroccan seafood and beach bar vibes. Each place adds its own flavor to the Tamaris experience, quite literally!
Reflections on Change
As I look back on my original article from 2016, I'm struck by how much Tamaris has changed, yet how it still retains the peaceful essence that first captured my heart. It's a testament to Morocco's ongoing development and the enduring appeal of its coastal communities.
For travelers, backpackers, and digital nomads, Tamaris offers a unique blend of modern amenities and laid-back coastal living. It's a place where you can work with an ocean view in the morning, unwind on the beach in the afternoon, and enjoy a fantastic meal in the evening.
As always, I encourage you to explore Tamaris with an open mind and heart. Engage with the local community, respect the environment, and immerse yourself in the unique atmosphere of this evolving coastal gem.
